Description
Predictors and Measures of Success Resident selection is an integral part of orthopaedic residency training programs. A large number of qualified applicants vie for a limited number of positions. (1-5) In 1975, only 68% of orthopaedic residency positions in programs that participated in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) were filled. (3,6) However, in recent years, almost all available orthopaedic residency positions have been consistently filled. In 2008, there were 932 applicants for 636 available orthopaedic residency positions. (7) Orthopaedic training programs receive 100 applications for each available position. (8) Selecting candidates to interview and rank is time-consuming for the orthopaedic faculty, and applying and interviewing is time-consuming for the applicants. (2-4) The current literature indicates lack of consensus regarding specific attributes that are indicative of success during residency training. However, trends can be seen. Table 1 lists the 10 most important items used for resident selection.
